On Sunday, April 3, the Norfolk State Music Department honored Dr. Amelia Ross-Hammond, retired distinguished faculty and professor of music, at its annual Spring Gala. Dr. Ross-Hammond, a Virginia Beach councilwoman, was serenaded by the department’s four major ensembles, followed by a slideshow highlighting photos from events during her years at the University. She was presented an engraved ceramic plate by Dr. Carl Haywood, chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, who was assisted by Terry Butler, chair of the Gala Committee. The students put on an outstanding performance and the event was well attended. During her tenure at NSU, Dr. Ross-Hammond served as choir director, department chair and director of service-learning and civic engagement. In her acceptance remarks, she announced the establishment of a $1000 Scholarship fund on behalf of the Ross family to assist music students with conference or concert costs so that they are able to showcase their amazing talents.
