Norfolk State University Athletics Director Marty L. Miller announced recently that the Labor Day Classic football game will return to the Spartans’ schedule in 2016 and run for a three-year period. NSU will host a pair of its old Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) rivals in the return of one of the signature games in Spartans’ tradition. NSU hosts Elizabeth City State at Dick Price Stadium on Sept. 3, 2016 and faces Virginia State on Sept. 2, 2017 and Sept. 1, 2018.
NSU was unable to play non-Division I competition on Labor Day weekend the last two seasons because of NCAA bylaws governing the first permissible start date for Division II football programs. “I am extremely happy to be able to finalize arrangements to return the Labor Day Classic to Dick Price Stadium,” Miller said. “I want to thank both Elizabeth City and Virginia State universities for agreeing to accept our invitation to bring back one of our most successful football weekend activities. This is a winner for all of our programs, student-athletes and fans.” The Spartans played Virginia State on Labor Day weekend each year from 1991-2009, and again from 2011-12 before opening with Division I FCS foe Maine the last two seasons. The Spartans have not played Elizabeth City State since 1996, NSU’s last season competing in the CIAA.
