Norfolk State University has selected Thompson Hospitality as its provider of campus dining services. The Virginia-based company currently serves more than 25 colleges, universities and preparatory schools across the country. Under the terms of the new agreement, Thompson Hospitality will manage dining services in the University’s dining facilities, student center and other retail locations across the NSU campus. Thompson Hospitality also will oversee catering services. Thompson Hospitality’s five-year contract began on May 16, 2016.
The process to select a vendor for campus dining at NSU began last fall and involved numerous stakeholders. A survey was conducted and students joined faculty and staff on a committee that reviewed proposals from prospective vendors. “Throughout the process, we have listened to our students and have been focused on their needs,” said Davida Harrell-Williams, director of Auxiliary Services. “In selecting Thompson Hospitality, we have chosen a partner we believe will enhance the campus dining experience for all members of our NSU community.
The agreement with Thompson Hospitality will lead to a number of campus dining improvements including:
- New locations that will feature sustainable, organic and locally grown offerings
- Be Right Burger (BRB) and Spartan Seafood Shack featuring Willie T’s
- Japanese Steakhouse and Diner
- Food truck
- Expanded dining hours
- Improved meal plans and new options for both resident and commuter students
Thompson Hospitality’s proposal also addresses the need to enhance the University’s on-campus dining facilities and the agreement is expected to fund millions of dollars in capital improvements over the next several years. NSU’s agreement with Thompson Hospitality has two five-year renewal options at the end of the contract period based on performance.
