It started out with a vision . . . followed by discussion and then a concept back in February last year. In an effort to maintain the health and wellness of the Norfolk State campus community, University leaders have created a fitness trail on the campus complete with exercise equipment. Pennoni, a civil engineering firm, was hired for the project and worked with Cunningham Recreation as the consultant & provider of the equipment. During the design phase, the trail designers had discussions with the Army ROTC, NSU baseball coach and random students on the concept. The course design is set up and is intended for all levels of exercise . . . from beginners to the more advanced athlete. ” It is intended for use by all NSU faculty, staff and students,” said Kenny Kyle, NSU capital project manager. The installation of the equipment started in late October and was completed by Conrad Brothers. The fitness trail project was completed Friday, December 30, 2016.
Kyle says that the course is laid out to be expandable, based on the level of the user. The primary route is two miles with the option of added routes, it can be expanded up to 3.8 miles. “We have eight workout stations and a total of 72 pieces of equipment. Additionally, we removed the chain link fence from behind Echols Hall and installed new brick columns and aluminum fencing along Majestic Avenue leading up to Gate 8. Fitness trail users can challenge themselves and others using various types of equipment including the captain’s chair, a cardio walker, an elliptical, parallel bars and more.
