By now you have probably read the book and/or seen the movie Hidden Figures. The book, written by Margot Lee Shetterly, is about the African American women dubbed “human computers” who were responsible for helping the U.S. win the space race. The movie opened last month to rave reviews. Here’s another little known fact for you to share at your next dinner party: Norfolk State University associate professor in the Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work, Dr. Colita Nichols Fairfax, has a connection to the Hidden Figures phenomena. Her research, “Hampton, Virginia” (Arcadia Publishing) is cited in Shetterly’s Hidden Figures bibliography. Fairfax researched and wrote about the women portrayed in the movie and chronicled in the book in her 2005 historiography about the African American community in Hampton.
