Norfolk State University President and CEO Eddie N. Moore Jr. recently met with Coast Guard representatives to sign a formal memorandum of agreement that will make the two entities partners in the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) program. CSPI is a Coast Guard scholarship program established in 1989 to improve the diversity of its officer corps. The signing took place at the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center and involved several active and retired Coast Guard officers who participated on leadership engagement panels for students.
Wayne Ivey, NSU’s director of military services and veterans affairs, said NSU will help to promote the Coast Guard and share opportunities the military branch offers to students. Ivey said like NSU’s Army and Navy ROTC branches, the Coast Guard offers student scholarships, training and other related benefits to prospective applicants. Last year, Ivey said an NSU alumnus who completed the program is currently attending Officer Candidate School.
