Theatre Company Participates in Project1Voice Event

The NSU Theatre Company and its producing artistic director, Professor Anthony Stockard were invited to participate in Project1VOICE’s annual international simultaneous event: 1-Voice, 1-Play, 1-Day.

The annual event presents a classic play or musical authored by an African-American artist. This year’s selected play, Yellowman was presented by over 45 theaters, in three countries, on the exact same day and included more than 200 coordinated events connected to the play’s presentation.

In Yellowman, a finalist for the 2002 Pulitzer Prize in Drama by Dael Orlandersmith, Alma and Eugene have known each other since they were young children. As their friendship blossoms into love, Alma struggles to free herself from her mother’s poverty and alcoholism, while Eugene must contend with the legacy of being “yellow”—lighter-skinned than his brutal and unforgiving father.

The NSU Theatre Company worked with its partners at the Zeider’s American Dream Theater to present the work in their venue, located in Virginia Beach at 4573 Bank Street in Town Center (across the walkway from the Sandler Center). Yellowman was presented June 19, at 7:00 p.m. The event was FREE and open to the public.
